SAILENT FEATURES ABOUT UJJAIN

Population: 5,00,000
STD code: 0734

Only 56 Kms. from Indore, ancient Ujjain is one of India's holiest city for hindus. It gets its sanctity form a mythological tale about the churning of the oceans by the gods and demons in search of the nectar of immorality. When the coveted vessel of nectar was finally found, they followed a mad scramble across the skies with the demons pursuing the gods in an attempt to take the nectar from them. Four drops were spilt and they fell at Haridwar, Nasik, Ujjain and Prayag (Allahabad) as a result, Ujjain is one of the cities for the Kumbh maila, which takes place here every 12-year. The 1992 Kumbh maila true millions to bath here in Shipra.

Despite its relative obscurity today, Ujjain ranks equal as great religions centre with such places as Varanasy, Gaya and Kanchipuram. Ujjain really comes alive during festival time. But the devotional vibe makes its a pleasant town year round.

HISTORY:

On an Asian trade route Ujjain has a distinguish history whose origins are lot in the mist of time. It was an important city under Ashok's father, when tit was known as Awantika. Later it was so attractive to Chandragupta II (380-414 AD) that he ruled from here rather then room his actual capital Patliputra. It was at his court that Kalidasa one of hinduism's most revered pots, wrote the meghdoot, with its famous lyrical descriptions of the city and its people.

With the passing of the Gupta's and the rise of Parmars, Ujjain became the centre of much termoil in the struggle for control of the Malwa region. The Musili Sultans of Mandu captured the last of the Parmar's, siladitya, and Ujjain thus passed into the hands of Mughalk Vassals.

Musli rule was sometimes violent, sometimes benign. An invasion by Altamish in 1234 resulted in the wholesale desecration of many temples, but that was halted during the region of Baz Bahadur himself was eventually overthrown by the mughal emperor, Akber later on, under Aurangzeb, grants were provided to fund temple reconstruction.

Following the demise of the mughals, Maharaja Jai Singh (of Jaipur fame) became the governor of Malwa, and during his rule the observatory and several new temples were constructed in Ujjain. With his passing, Ujjain experienced another period of termoil at the hands of the Marathas untill it was finally taken by the Scindia in 1750. When the Scindia capital was moved to Gwalior in 1810, Ujjain's commercial importance declined rapidly.

ORIENTATION INFORMATIONS:

The railway line divides the city; the old section; including the bazaar and the most of the temples, and the gahts; are to the northwest of the city, and the new section is on the southeast side. The majority of hotels are in front of railway station. Tourist information is available at Zeenat Air Travels Ujjain.

TEMPLES:

MAHAKALESHWAR TEMPLE: The most important temple in Ujjain, the Mahakaleshwar Temple is dedicated to Shiva. The temple enshrined on of India's 12 Jyotirlings believed to derive current of power (shakti) from within them as opposed to lingam ritual invested with mantrashakti by the priests. The mith of jyotilingam (the lingam of light) stems from a long dispute from primacy between Brahma and vishnu. During the dispute, according to legend the earth split apart to reveal an incandescent column. Vishnu became a boar and burrowed underground while Brahma took to skied in the form of eagle. After 1000 year of foodless searching, Shiva emerged from the lingam of light and both Brahma and Vishnu acknowledged that it was he who was the greatest of the gods.

Altamish of Delhi destroyed the temple in 1235 but restore by the Scindia in the 19th century. Non-hindus are welcome to make the busy, jostling round of the many mini-temples in the evocative complex.

BADA GANESHJI KA MANDIR: Above the tank near Mahakaleshwar Temple, the large omate statue of Ganesh here makes this temple a popular pilgrimage spot.

HARSIDDHI TEMPLE: Built during the Maratha period, this temple enshrines a famous image the goddess Annapurna. The two large pillars adorned with lamps were a special fatur of Maratha art and are spectacular when lit at Navratri (Dussehra) in September/October.

GOPAL MANDIR: The marble-spired Gopal mandir was reconstructed by the queen of Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia in the 19th century and is an excellent example Maratha Architecture.
The silver-plated doors of the sanctum have quite a history. They were originally taken from the temples at Somnath in Gujrat at Ghazni in Afganistan and then Lahore by Mahmud Shah Abdali. From there were rescused by the Mahadji Scindia and shortly afterwords installed in the temple. This is a very large temple but easy to miss it's buried in the bazaar.

CHINTAMAN GANESH TEMPLE: On the opposite bank of the river Shipra, this temple is believed to be of considerable antiquity. The artistically carved pillars of the assembly hall date back to the Parmar Period.

GHATS:

Since most of the temples are relatively recent construction you may find more of interest on the ghats, especially at dawn and dusk when the locals frame their days with prayed. The largest ghat is Ram ghat, fairly close to the Harsiddhi Temple. The others are some considerable distance north centre.

VEDH SHALA (OBERVATORY): Since the 4 th centaury BC, Ujjain has been India's Greenwich(as for as Indian geographers were concerned), with the first meredian of longitute passing through it. Maharaja Jai Singh, built one of his quirky observatories here between 1725 and 1730 AD. This one is smaller then those in Jaipur or Delhi but it are still in use and quite interesting. The very enthusiastic curator will demonstrate the function of the exhibits, but his English is a little hard to follow. Astrologers can purchase the complete year's astronomical ephemeris in both English and Hindi at the observatory for Rs.15.

KALIADEH PALACE: O an islan in the Shipra river. Eight km. north of town is the water palace of the Mandu Sultans, constructed in 1458. River water is diverted over shone screens in the palace, and the bridge to the island uses carving from the sun temple, which one stood here. The central dome of the palace is a good example of Persian architecture.
With the downfall of Mandu, the palace gradually fell in to ruin but was restored, along with the nearby sun temple, by Madhavrao Sciendiain 1930.

GADKALIKA TEMPLE: 3 Kms, from the town, the deity is believed to have been worshiped by Kalidas. Emperor Harshvarhan had this temple renovated in the 7th centaury A.D.

KALBHAIRAVA TEMPLE: This ancient temple has its importance due to deity who like to drink liquor. The devotees come here to offer liquor to the deity. The priest here performs puja, in the contents of puja liquor is also included. The priest offer liquor to the deity, which deity drinks automatically just by making the vessel touch to the lips.

NAVGRAHA TEMPLE: This temple is dedicated to the nine planets.

MANGALNATH: It is the birth place of Mars according to the Skandhapuran. Mahadeva is the worshipped deity here. Poet Kalidasa used to worship the deity of kalika here.

NAJMI MAJAR: Beside Hinduism Ujjain is also a religious place for Dawoodi bohra Community, a sect of islam. Ujjain used to be a seat of this community almost hundred year ago. Najmi majar is having graves of three departed holy leader of this community.
